ARCHIVES AWARENESS WEEK 2026

The Archives Association of Ontario has designated April 7-10, 2026 as Archives Awareness Week.

As our province and our country faces tough financial times and a shift towards austerity, there is an increasing need to show the vital role that archives play in preserving our history and protecting democracy.

Therefore, our theme for 2026 is: "Archives Activism: Advocating for Archives Survival”.

Now is the time to collectively raise our voices and advocate for archives. This week is your opportunity to celebrate the creative ways you speak up and out for your repository and for archives in general.

Archives Awareness Week. Archives Activism: Advocating for Archives Survival. April 7-10, 2026. #2026AAW. aao-archivists.ca

Join the AAO Website takeover for Archives Awareness Week 2026 and submit stories and images about archives activism!

Help the AAO document the wins, the losses, and the persistent, ongoing effort to highlight just how much the survival of archives matters to our communities. This week is your opportunity to celebrate the creative ways you speak up and out for your repository and for archives in general.

Share an image of resistance and advocacy! Tell us about your outreach efforts to make archival work visible, share ideas for public awareness campaigns, or outline your funding event creativity. Your submissions can be personal stories about your work as an archivist, descriptions of advocacy initiatives within your organization, or brief highlights of archival fonds related to activism.

No submission is too short or too long - archives have always been political and now, more than ever, we need to engage with activism in our professional practice.

Stories will be collected and posted by the AAO Web Administrator to the AAO's 2026 Archives Awareness Week page to celebrate archives activism during 2026's Archives Awareness Week from Tuesday, April 7 to Friday, April 10. Images will also be compiled and shared on our social media accounts throughout the week!

Examples of possible archives activism stories to share:

  • Fundraising activities for your archives

  • Current or past outreach events promoting visibility of archives and archivists

  • Online tools for promotion and public awareness campaigns

  • Stories of organizing activism campaigns with community groups

  • Records or collections in your care related to activism

  • Links to advocacy resources relevant to archives

Please include images and relevant links related to your story.

Submit information to this form by Friday, March 20, 2026

If you have any questions, you can contact the Communications and Advocacy Committee Chair at communications@aao-archivists.ca.

The form collects your email as the point of contact for posting your story to the AAO website. If you are not the point of contact for your story, include the relevant email.
