2018 Conference

The 2018 AAO Conference is being held from May 9 - 11, 2018 at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishnaabeg, and Haudenosaunee peoples. Both universities are situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land promised to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. This year's theme is Celebrations: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Registration for the 2018 AAO Conference is now closed.

AAO members and conference attendees are invited to participate in online discussions via Twitter by using the official conference hashtags #aao18conf or #aao25.

Conference Registration

Registration for the 2018 AAO Conference is now closed. The following events are included with your registration, though attendees are encouraged to register to facilitate planning associated with each event:


The Conference Banquet will be taking place on Thursday, May 10 at 7:00 pm at The Berlin. This event fee is $60.00 and is not included as part of the general conference registration.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPs


The conference kicks off with great pre-conference workshops on May 9, 2018, organized by the AAO's Professional Development Committee:

Introduction to Digital Preservation: Key Concepts and Tools (full day 9am-4pm)

Instructor: Grant Hurley

This course will introduce participants to the key concepts, practices and tools in digital preservation. It will be followed by a demonstration and discussion of a variety of tools that practitioners can begin using to meet their digital preservation goals. The course is intended for non-experts who would like to get to know the field and to apply tools and techniques to low-resource institutional environments.

The conference workshop is available to all members of the AAO at a rate of $150. Non-member rate is $200.00. For more details on the workshop visit the AAO website.

Archival Description with RAD (half day 9am-12pm)

Instructor: Lisa Snider


This workshop will provide half-day introduction to archival cataloguing using Canadian content standard, Rules for Archival Description (RAD), with a focus on entry into an AtoM database such as Archeion. Participants will learn how to do a multi-level archival description at the first level of detail for a fonds and series.


The conference workshop is available to all members of the AAO at a rate of $65. Non-members rate is $100. Student AAO member rate is $50. For more details on the workshop visit AAO website.

Subject Headings and Taxonomies (half day 1pm-4pm)

Instructor: Lisa Snider


This workshop follows the morning session on Archival Description with RAD. The workshop covers subject headings as well as name access points, including for provenance and geographic names, with a focus on entry into an AtoM database such as Archeion.

The conference workshop is available to all members of the AAO at a rate of $65. Non-members rate is $100. Student AAO member rate is $50. For more details on the workshop visit AAO website.

CANCELLATION POLICY

The following table summarized how refunds will be processed if the AAO cancels the Annual Conference and/or if participants cancel their conference registration:

Cancellation of Conference by AAO Full refund 
Cancellation by registrant up to one week prior to the event Refund,less 20% cancellation charge to cover administrative cost
Cancellation by registrant one week to 48 hours prior to the event Refund, less 50% cancellation charge to cover administrative cost 
Cancellation by registrant less than 48 hours prior to the event No refund  
Registrant did not attend the conference without any notification No refund
